Perhaps more than any other orisa, Sango exemplifies the effects of identity crisis. There are several verses of Ifa that teach us about the times when Sango was troubled as a result of either being away from his ancestral home or ignorant of his true identity.

In the Holy Odu OsaIwori, for example, Ifa says that the people we bullying Sango by relegating him to a subservient status. It got so bad that they stopped calling him by his name and referred to him as the slave.

Exasperated, Sango went to consult Ifa and was advised to go in search of his father’s lineage. The awo told Sango that he would know power and earn respect only after he discovered his true identity. Sango completed the sacrifice and began the journey.

He found his father’s house as predicted. But while Sango was away, the people were slandering his name again, calling him the slave. But now, empowered by his true father, Sango commanded the skies to darken with clouds and his voice rumbled like an earthquake! Then, the slanderous liars fell to their knees and hailed him, Kabiesi! Your royal majesty!

Orisa Lifestyle is a tradition based upon reality. A leopard will only beget more leopards. No matter how long a log rests in the river, it will never become a crocodile. A word is more than enough for the wise.
