Help Your Child Name What They Feel Don’t Rush to Fix It
Children can’t manage emotions they can’t identify. When they’re upset, take a breath before responding and gently help them find words.
Try saying:
• “It sounds like you’re feeling frustrated because your toy broke.”
• “I can see your face looks sad. Do you feel hurt or disappointed?”
When parents slow down and name emotions, it helps children build emotional vocabulary and feel understood.
How to start:
Create a Feelings Chart at bedtime. Ask, “What emotions did you feel today?” Let them point, draw, or describe without judgment.
