We certainly were not surprised when we received a call from the County Clerks Office inquiring if we had a business license.

We want to be very transparent with our customers. So I’ll start by sharing our story behind the produce wagon. We started selling produce on the wagon for our three kids. We wanted to teach them the value of a dollar. We wanted them to understand the value of hard work and responsibilities. They maintained the wagon from helping plant garden to picking vegetables to putting the product out to sell. (Or sometimes even purchasing wholesale to resell) They did it all. The first year they grossed $700. They were tickled to death to have worked all summer to split $700 three ways. The second year they grossed $400 to split three ways.

In the state of Tennessee you must apply with the county clerk’s office to obtain a business license for businesses with gross receipts of $3,000 or more. We fall well below the state requirements for having to have a business license. We will continue to operate without a business license until we reach that threshold.

We shared all this to say, we are not making a living off of our produce. We both have full time jobs. The produce wagon is for our kids to make a little bit of money. We are thankful that the Lord has blessed us with an abundance of vegetables to be able to share with our family, friends, and neighbors and we will continue to do so.

(If you were the one to call to inquire about us, please know we are not upset and we wish you all the best with your business! We love to see others succeed!)
