Last night at our monthly meeting, crewmembers, along with 2 cute extra helpers, held a belated celebration of Caryn Hojer's 25th (+1!) anniversary with De Smet Rescue.

Over the past 26 years, she has served De Smet Rescue in many different capacities to include EMT, billing, business manager, supplies, umpteen coat and clothing orders, our resident legal advisor, among many more things. Caryn has also had all 4 of her kids plus her son-in-law that have since become members of De Smet Rescue and De Smet Fire. The example you've set and the contributions you've made to De Smet Rescue has not only solidified the stability of this service in this community, you have built a lasting legacy that we're positive will continue into this next generation of us and many more to come.

Thank you, Caryn, for your commitment, sacrifice and dedication to De Smet Rescue. We look forward to all that is to come. Happy 25th.... plus 1.....anniversary!

In alignment with EMS week’s theme “Improving outcomes, together”, De Smet Rescue joined forces with a trooper from the South Dakota Highway Patrol as well as staff from South Dakota EMS for Children. Wednesday night 6 crew members assisted with skills at Drivers Education. Trooper Schuknecht taught the group on Choices, Chances and Decisions. This discusses impairment, distracted driving, the importance of seatbelts, and how to share the road with bicyclists. The students were also taught the importance of seatbelt use, what to do if they come up on a crash, and calling 911. South Dakota EMS for Children taught on Stop the Bleed. De Smet Rescue then assisted in the hands on portion ensuring the students knew how to stop the bleed and save a life. They practiced direct pressure, packing the wound and tourniquet application. Each student left with a Stop the Bleed kit, which is a 70$ value, covered through a Safety and Injury Prevention grant with the SD OHS. De Smet Rescue was awarded a Stop the Bleed training kit in a Regional Services Designation Grant, and made good use of it with this group of students!

During EMS week it seems fitting to share this exciting news! Please join us in congratulating our newest EMT! Jason Small joined our crew as an EVOC in 2019. He spent the winter completing an EMT class with Beadle County and recently passed the National EMT exam. Thank you Jason for your dedication to our crew and our community!
