Design and Fabrication of High-Efficiency, Low-Power, and Low-Leakage Si-Avalanche Photodiodes for Low-Light Sensing 05/05/2023

Amita Rawat, a Postdoctoral Scientist in our research group, played a key role in demonstrating photon-trapping avalanche photodiodes (APDs) in that operate at low voltage, offering high efficiency, low noise, high gain, and fast response. These photon-trapping slow-light sensors have the potential to detect short pulses of light containing a single or a few photons, which can have important applications in communication, autonomous driving, quantum computing, spectroscopy, medical imaging, and other emerging fields. We are excited about the possibilities that this device presents and look forward to further exploration in this area.

Design and Fabrication of High-Efficiency, Low-Power, and Low-Leakage Si-Avalanche Photodiodes for Low-Light Sensing Since the advent of impact ionization and its application in avalanche photodiodes (APD), numerous application goals have contributed to steady improvements over several decades. The characteristic high operating voltages and the need for thick absorber layers (π-layers) in the Si-APDs pose complic...
