One of the biggest struggles I see Founders and Owners have is FOCUS. We can be fantastic at setting the Vision for our companies but, sometimes we lack the Focus to achieve the results of our Vision.
Wendy was a coaching client of mine. When I first met Wendy she wanted to sell to Brick & Mortar stores, Online Retailers, her own website, and Big Box stores. As you can see that’s a lot of different things to start all at once.
Wendy was so busy trying to be all things to all people. It was super confusing for her team. One week they were to be working on growing B&M. The next week it was their website. And the next was online retailers. Her team was so confused and quite frankly losing faith in Wendy’s leadership.
Wendy seemed to go where the wind blew her also known as Bright & Shiny Syndrome.
The first thing I did with Wendy was help her create a 6-Week Game Plan. The process of creating a plan helped her dial in on what was really important to her and the growth of the business.
Next, we introduced the Plan to her team. (Side note: in normal situations I would have everyone involved from the beginning but because Wendy had a problem defining her focus & vision I felt it was better to do this first round one on one.)
The team was then able to create benchmarks for the 6 weeks to implement the plan.
The best part was they were accountable to each other. If Wendy started to go off track the team would kindly remind her of the Game Plan.
Wendy and her team accomplished more in those 6 weeks than they had in the previous 3 months.
Oh in case you were wondering what their focus was for the first 6-Week Game Plan it was aligning their internal systems to work more efficiently with Internet Retailers. It was the first step to properly growing the channel.
