"Now, the church that absorbed trauma will teach truth."
The Historic Vernon AME Church is the last standing Black-owned structure from the Black Wall Street era. When the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre destroyed the community, the church's basement offered refuge while the superstructure burned.
We are honored to work alongside The Vernon Witness to announce a monumental preservation project. Led by descendant and advocate Kristi Williams, this initiative will transform the site into a living cultural institution and museum, funded in part by Mellon Foundation.
The recent groundbreaking ceremony unveiled plans to restore the site and display over 5,000 artifacts, ensuring that the history of Greenwood is not just remembered, but inherited by future generations.

CBS News Texas recently featured the museum and the powerful story of a local Holocaust survivor, preserved in the museum’s first gallery. As antisemitism and racial hatred continue to rise, these stories are more important than ever in fostering empathy, understanding, and action.
