*SOLD* “Interval” by Lisa Moriarty.

This was the first artwork to sell at the Opening Night of “Breathing Space.” We can see why the collector couldn’t leave without it. Lisa Moriarty has used her distinct artistic methods to create a piece with movement and stillness, repeated patterns and unexpected variations, translucency and opaqueness. Both the details when viewed up close and the impression when seen from afar draw the viewer in.

With this, we have covered all the artworks in “Breathing Space.” You’re invited to see the full collection at ALG Fine Art until June 27th. For now, here are a few words from Lisa Moriarty about the impact of the body of work as a whole.

“This collection explores the ocean as a space of memory, transformation, and connection, shaped by family histories, personal experience, and the ever-changing Northern California coast. Through encaustic, fabric, and layered translucent materials, the work captures fleeting coastal moments: shifting tides, fog in transition, churning water, and the quiet stillness held within them.

“Rooted in lived experiences, walking the shoreline, gathering sea glass, observing tide pools, and sharing intergenerational stories, these pieces reflect both the physical landscape and the emotional imprint it leaves behind. Materials are fused, stitched, and layered to echo the rhythms of the sea, allowing light, depth, and movement to emerge organically.

“Rather than depicting specific places, the work preserves impressions, fragments of color, texture, and atmosphere. Together, the pieces form a visual language of water, holding both motion and stillness, fragility and resilience, and inviting the viewer into a contemplative space of reflection and quiet immersion.”

“Resides in a Tidepool: Circle” by Lisa Moriarty.

Lisa Moriarty’s original series “Resides in a Tidepool” is one of the most memorable installations in her collection. Each of the 12 panels offers a glimpse into a tidepool, created by the gradual and intentional layering of encaustic wax. In this variation, Lisa has used the same technique to create the movement and flow of a tidepool on a circular panel.

You can see even more of the details of encaustic wax layers, how the colors merge and move together to form wave-like patterns. Lisa explains her creative process in her artist statement below.

“Created using encaustic medium, beeswax combined with pigment, this work is painted onto wood panels to evoke the dynamic, ever-changing environment of active tide pools. The surface is built through layered applications of wax in varying shades of blue and white, each layer fused with heat to create depth and cohesion.

“A torch is used to gently manipulate the wax, allowing it to open and separate into delicate, laced patterns. Within these formations, tiny clear windows emerge, revealing glimpses beneath the surface. These translucent pockets echo the experience of looking into tide pools, where foamy, circulating water forms a shifting veil over intricate, living worlds below.

“The interplay between opacity and transparency becomes central to the piece. Areas of dense, milky wax contrast with moments of clarity, mimicking the way turbulent water both obscures and reveals. Light interacts with these layers, catching on the textured surface and moving through the clearer passages, creating a sense of depth and quiet motion.”
