As we continue our Black History Month celebration, we’re shining the spotlight on our next brilliant Black mind, Joseph Lee, the creator of the automatic bread maker!

As a passionate baker, inventor and entrepreneur, Lee created the automatic bread maker in 1894, completely revolutionizing the professional baking industry in the process as the machine was able to produce 60 pounds more bread from each barrel of flour than was possible by hand.

To this day, all modern bread mixers are able to trace their origins back to Lee’s invention. So next time you go to take a bite of a tasty hot dog from your favorite 7-Eleven, make sure to thank Joseph Lee for that delicious bun!

It’s Black History Month, and to celebrate we are lifting up a few of the brilliant Black minds whose inventions have played a role in making 7-Eleven what we are today.

First up, George Speck “Crum” (or his sister Catherine depending who you ask), the inventor(s) of the potato chip!

These salty snacks were claimed to be invented in 1853 at Moon’s Lake House in Saratoga Lake, NY after an unhappy customer sent his potatoes back for not being crispy enough. In a flash of what we now recognize as pure genius, George (or Catherine) sliced the potatoes extra thin and deep fried them, creating the first potato chip!
