The black sand beaches north of Kaikoura and in the wider Canterbury/Marlborough region are formed by the erosion of dark-colored volcanic rock and iron-rich materials transported to the coast by rivers and coastal currents. These heavy minerals, such as titanomagnetite, originate from eroded, ancient volcanic activity.
