Day 2: The Radical Invitation
Scripture:
"‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’" — Matthew 4:19

Reflection: When Jesus invites the brothers to follow Him, He isn't offering a casual philosophy; He is revealing His identity. This invitation comes from Jesus, God's incarnate Son. He is the One who would later go to the cross, crucified for our sins, and be victoriously resurrected from the dead by God’s power.
Because He conquered sin and death, His words carry absolute authority. When He says "Come, follow me," He is offering to take the weight of your past and substitute it with a purpose that echoes into eternity. He takes what you know—for them, fishing—and elevates it into something supernatural.

Daily Call to Action: Identify one area of your life (a skill, a relationship, or a hobby) that you usually keep to yourself. Hand it over to Jesus today by praying: "Lord, show me how to use this to 'fish for people' and serve others."

This week I will share a 5-Day devotional series which reflects upon John 4:4-15. Each day features a scripture focus, a reflection connecting personal faith, national ideals, and the Gospel, and a practical application step.
My prayer is it will encourage us to go deeper so we experience the transformative power God desires to have enter lives.

Day 1: Beyond Self-Interest
Scripture Focus: “Now he had to go through Samaria.” — John 4:4

Reflection:

The text says Jesus had to go through Samaria. Geographically, there were other routes Jews often took to avoid Samaria entirely due to centuries of intense cultural and religious animosity. But Jesus operated on a different map—one dictated by divine appointment, not personal convenience or self-preservation.

When we live purely out of self-interest, our world shrinks. We aim small, focus strictly on our own planning and preservation, and miss the larger territory God wants us to impact. The core of American exceptionalism rests on ideals that look beyond the individual to the "general Welfare" and the "Blessings of Liberty" for all. Yet, both as individuals and as a nation, our default setting is often self-preservation. Following Jesus daily means allowing Him to reroute our lives through the "Samarias" we would rather avoid, stepping outside our comfort zones to meet real human needs with the Gospel.

Application (Hands):

Be honest with yourself today. Identify one area where your own comfort or self-interest is keeping you from serving someone else. Intentionally choose a route of generosity or service today that costs you comfort but extends Christ's love.
