Harlem Rhapsody
Victoria Christopher Murray
πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š
Harlem Rhapsody is set around 1919 in Harlem, New York. The book tells us about one of the greatest literary minds during that time, Jessie Redman Fauset. Ms. Fauset is fluent in many languages and well educated from Cornell University. I have never heard of Ms. Fauset but after this book, I would like to do more research about her.
Ms. Fauset is the daughter of a minister and the step-daughter of a white Jewish mother. Her step mother Bella is a staunch integrationist and her greatest supporter especially after her Father’s death.
This book is an easy read and you learn so much about the careers that Ms. Fauset help to launch like Langston Hughes, Nella Lawson, Countee Cullen and many more.
Ms. Fauset is hired by W.E.B. Du Bois to be the Literary Editor of the Crisis Magazine. The most important Negro magazine of that time.
W.E.B. Du Bois and Ms. Fauset have a great working relationship and partnership. They have been lovers for years and he is 14 years her senior with a wife. She finds out later she is not his only other woman on the side.
It’s a great book about our literary past and future.
