Colitis is the inflammation of the intestines due to an immune response to the presence of pathogens or food antigens. Symptoms includes diarrhea, mucus or blood in the stool, increased frequency and urgency of defecation, and weight loss.

The nutritional management of colitis includes diets with:

High quality and highly digestible proteins and carbohydrates such as fresh chicken and rice

Soluble and insoluble fibers such as those found in whole fruits and vegetables

Foods with omega 3s such as fish or fish oil

Moderated to low levels of fat

If colitis is caused by a food antigen it is recommended to use diets with hydrolyzed or novel proteins and gluten-free carbohydrates such as rice, fruits and vegetables.
