Chhat Dano

I'd been with Daniel for three years—funny, kind, family-oriented. His parents are deaf. They live abroad, and though we'd only video-chatted with Daniel translating, he always described them as loving and eager to meet me.

What he didn't know? I'd secretly learned sign language for over a year to connect with them directly.

When we finally flew in for our engagement dinner, I planned to quietly observe first. As they signed, I followed along silently—until something changed.

His mom turned to him:

"YOU HAVEN'T TOLD HER?"
"Not yet," he signed.
"You're lying. TIME IS UP. She needs to know about it before marrying you."

My heart stopped after what she signed next.
