With the 4th of July holiday coming up, we want to let everyone know that Allegany College of Maryland will be closed tomorrow in observance of the holiday. The Learning Commons Library will reopen on Monday, July 6 with our regular summer hours of 8:00 am-7:00 pm. The library is open today (7/2) until 4:30. With the excessive heat, make sure you stay indoors as much as possible and drink plenty of water if you're outside. And for your safety, leave the fireworks to the experts! Have a great holiday, everyone!

Margie has put together two special displays that will be up in the Learning Commons Library through at least the 4th of July. She did a Memorial Day display that honors family members of ACM faculty and staff who were killed during World War II. That display is now around the back of the D-Day/World War II display that honors family members of ACM faculty and staff who returned home no matter where they served during the war. Some of those who submitted photos included great stories about their family members, so Margie put together a handout will those and all the other service members who are honored on the display. There are also books and DVDs that are available for check-out. Stop by the library and check out the display!

Matt S’s Movie Picks
“Easy, miss. I got you.”- Superman
“You’ve got me? Who’s got you?”- Lois Lane

If you find yourself falling out of a helicopter, let’s hope there’s a superhero around to rescue you. Lois Lane, played by Margot Kidder, found that out in the 1978 classic “Superman”, also starring Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman and Christopher Reeve as the Man of Steel. This movie was really groundbreaking for its time as superhero movies were not commonplace at this point. Christopher Reeve’s first film as Superman would prove that comic book characters could be taken seriously and translated successfully to the silver screen.

The movie opens with the destruction of Krypton and a young boy being sent in a rocket to planet earth, where he would be found by Jonathan and Martha Kent. The Kents named him Clark and raised the boy, who would eventually grow up to become Superman, as their own. After moving to the city of Metropolis, Clark meets fellow reporter Lois Lane and the nefarious Lex Luthor, who would become one of Superman’s greatest enemies.

If you’re looking for more cinematic adventures of the Man of Steel, the library currently has “Superman Returns,” “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League” among others. Let’s get watching!
