Last night, I had the honor of joining the Crown Point Rotary Club as the organization celebrated 90 years in CP! โ€œService Above Self,โ€ is the clubโ€™s motto, and I canโ€™t think of a better mission for such a dedicated group of individuals. Thank you for serving our community for nearly a century!๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Good Afternoon Everyone. I recently shared this information on another page on a similar post. I know it's a bit long but it helps to briefly explain the long and much needed steps to correct these downtown and surrounding road and property flooding problems with the completion of our Downtown Interceptor Project. The flooding of the downtown and surrounding areas has been going on for many, many years. I grew up just down the street and remember the same two intersections of Main/South & Court/South flooding after heavy rains; on some level, it has been an issue going that far back. Jumping well ahead to 2017-2018, the city developed and adopted a major infrastructure project that would resolve these flooding issues, the Downtown Interceptor Project. The flooding comes about because the main stormwater piping that the stormwater goes into is too small to move large amounts of water quickly; as a result, the water stays on the roadway, backs up onto people's property and sometimes all the way into their basements or crawl. As the rainfall slows, the pipes catch up and the water then properly flows into them. Because the downtown area is one of the oldest sections of CP, the piping laid back then is one size and simply is not big enough, hence the long time flooding issues, it has nothing to do with new developments elsewhere around the city. The Interceptor Project is a 3-mile route that will have a 4 ft wide pipe installed 20-30 ft deep along this route. This large pipe will allow all of the water to flow into it, stopping this flooding, and carrying it to the wastewater plant in a more controlled manner. In 2022-2023, I began to work with the current City Council to make this long needed project a reality. The final design & specific logistical planning were completed, we applied for and were awarded low interest funding from the State's SRF Funding Program to pay for it as the scale of a infrastructure project of this size is tens of millions of dollars. Once we had this in place, came the bidding and hiring of the companies to make the installations; this has been done. The construction is underway and we are about 25% complete of this 2-year project. The construction sites going on now are along N Main St and Harrington Ave./Joliet St. I've attached the complete route of where this piping will be installed. With the recent onslaught of downpours we've had, I am not shy about going to our residents homes who have seen their road sections flooded, their yards and more. I share with each what I'm sharing here. I also have provided monthly updates on this project at my monthly community forums, which I will continue to do. If anyone would like more information on this, please do not hesitate to contact me directly, our Utilities Department, or the Mayor's Office. This project's completion cannot come fast enough for our community. I am beyond frustrated for those affected but I am grateful that this vital project has finally begun.

Our annual City-wide picnic was a definite success! From what was no doubt our largest ever turnout, fantastic weather and of course the food, it was such a great community event. Our picnic is one of my personal favorite events we host; visiting with people who have come for many years to those that I was able to meet for the first time. For me, nothing beyond that, just saying Hi, volunteering along side our rock solid employees, community volunteers and CP elected officials to serve our fellow residents and visitors. I've been fortunate to have volunteered at every picnic since it was started 18 years ago, super blessed for that. A big thank you to everyone who came out, you are what help makes our community as great as it is! ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ท

Update on the 113th Ave. overpass project.

The bridge deck and partial superstructure replacement project at 113th Ave over I-65 is progressing, with bridge demolition work completed in May and new concrete structure installation (end bent, wing wall, & slope walls) in progress since then. Bridge beam steel er****on is scheduled for mid-July.

No additional impacts are expected on I-65 until a change in the traffic pattern around early September, which will require overnight lane closures. Motorists should still be alert for crews and navigate the work zone carefully through this time. The project is ongoing through October.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Defining good government 06/22/2026

A very good column by Cal Bellamy, the President Emeritus of the Shared Ethics Advisory Commission, in which CP is heavily involved. The article addresses the importance of good government; Effective, Efficient, Ethical. CP has and continues to serve an active role with this Commission, having been a charter member in its creation; and continuing to serve on both its Executive and Advisory Boards. Our Council, Boards and Commission members also attend annual training sessions sponsored by the Commission. Beyond that, all of our city employees receive annual Ethics training as part of our quarterly Lunch and Learns we host for all of our employees. CP has been providing this training for many, many years. As Mayor, I was honored to be selected to serve along side two other Mayors as guest panelists at the Shared Ethics Commission annual luncheon, a well attended event where all topics related to ethics and good government were discussed and ideas exchanged. Lastly, I want our community to know that CP has always had and continues to have a very strong presence at these types of trainings, which is a credit to our employees and those serving in decision making roles. Effective, Efficient, Ethical.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Defining good government Ethics are an essential element of quality government all the time. Where does Northwest Indiana stand on this vital component of good government?
