Great news! Our fire safety partners at Cumberland County Fire/Rescue recently reported that smoke alarms installed nearly one year ago were activated, alerting a home's occupants and giving them time to escape the toxic smoke and dangerous flames of a kitchen fire.

Kitchen fires are among the leading causes of home fires in Tennessee and nationally. Cooking at home? Remember:

-Avoid distractions. Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling. If you have to leave the room, even for a moment, turn off the stove’s burners.

-Be mindful of your alcohol consumption while preparing food.

-Use a kitchen timer when boiling, simmering, baking, or roasting to remind yourself to check what you are cooking.

The Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office's "Get Alarmed, Tennessee!" program puts home safety in the hands of firefighters and homeowners through our FREE smoke and CO alarm program. Our smoke alarm program has saved 527 lives since its inception in 2012 and our carbon monoxide detector program is already saving lives as well.
