Let’s talk about the horse market… because it is NOT the 2000s anymore.
Somewhere along the line, people missed the memo that $1,500–$3,000 doesn’t buy what it used to.
Feed is up.
Hay is up.
Shoeing is up.
Vet bills are up.
Fuel, entry fees, land, insurance, training time — ALL up.
But expectations?
Still stuck in 2006.
Everyone says they want a: ✔️ Dead quiet
✔️ Broke for the whole family
✔️ Sound
✔️ Safe on trails
✔️ Arena finished
✔️ No maintenance
✔️ No issues
✔️ Under $5k
That horse exists…
…but the days of finding 10 of them in every sale barn aisle for cheap are over.
The reality is:
A truly broke, safe, reliable horse takes YEARS of feed, training, hauling, and miles. People want a finished product but don’t want to pay for the time and risk it took to make one.
And here’s the other side people don’t talk about:
Sellers aren’t getting rich. Most are just trying to stay afloat after putting real money into producing a good horse. By the time a horse is hauled, shod, vetted, entered, and fed for years — the price you see is often just keeping the lights on.
This isn’t a “prices are crazy” post.
It’s a “the entire cost of producing a good horse has changed” post.
You can still find deals.
You can still find diamonds in the rough.
But expecting the same prices from 15–20 years ago while everything else in life has doubled or tripled just isn’t realistic anymore.
Curious where everyone stands on this:
Are horse prices out of control?
Or are we finally seeing prices match the cost of producing a solid, usable horse?
