When presented like this, it's really clear what happens to a child's head, brain, neck, and spine in a car crash. It's also why we want to keep kids rear-facing until they max out one of the limits of their car seat.
š³ A young child's head, brain, neck, and spine simply are not developed enough to withstand crash forces. When you combine an underdeveloped spine with an oversized head and decide to face your child forward anyway, you are setting them up to be injured. I know that is blunt, but it's true.
It's really quite simple--the more time we give our children's bodies to strengthen and their bones to fuse together, the less risk of fatal injury in a car crash. ā
Of course, our kids will turn forward-facing one day. Let's just make sure that day is when we have given their bodies ample time to develop on the inside and the outsideā so their bodies can handle the crash forces free of injury or worse! Max out your car seat's rear-facing limits and then turn them forward-facing!

Why Rear-Facing is Safest How long should your child ride rear-facing in their car seat? As long as possible! When your rear-facing child is in a properly installed car seat and harne...
When I tell people that most kids will need a booster seat until ages 10-12, they look at me like Iām insane! But, simply put, they make car seats for childrenās bodies, while they make vehicle seat belts for adult bodies. Ditching the booster seat is not about age, weight, or height, it's all about how the child FITS in the vehicle seat belt. And most kidsās bodies will not fit in an adult sized vehicle seatbelt until this age. To be able to *safely* ride in the car with no booster, your child must meet ALL the seat belt fit test requirements.
-Back against the seat
-Knees bent over the seat edge
-Lap belt across lap, not belly
-Shoulder belt between the childās neck and shoulder
-And your child must be mature enough to sit upright in position for the entire drive
Here is also a crash test simulation with a booster vs. no booster. This is a 6 year old child, going 35mph.

Hereās your friendly reminder that lower anchors have a weight limit. Check your car seat manual to find out what your seatās limit is.
