The other day I tutored a bright young lady on using substitutions to solve integrals. On the way home I found myself grinning from ear to ear remembering my High School Calculus teacher, Mr. Studer, and his lessons on “obvious” substitutions which were all but obvious to us and how that knowledge allowed me to solve integral physic problems faster than my classmates could look up the answers in the CRC handbook.
