Fall deworming is here! Now is the time to deworm your horses. The dewormer of choice for *ADULT* horses this time of year is:

❓️Do you know what the most recent deworming recommendations for horses are?

🪱Currently, 80% of horses need to be dewormed twice yearly, once in the spring and once in the fall. 20% of horses need to be dewormed more frequently, so we recommend dropping off a f***l sample twice a year to make sure your horse is on the right program!

🪱Rotational deworming is no longer recommended in horses over the age of 3 years, since it can lead to parasite resistance.

❓️Why fall deworming?

🪱As the days get shorter and weather gets colder, the most common equine parasite, the small strongyle, will hibernate by becoming encysted. This means that they burrow into the horse’s intestinal wall. Most dewormers will not be able to treat this encysted stage of parasite. The exception is Quest (moxidectin) or the Panacur PowerPak.

🪱Moxidectin is a safe dewormer, however its safety margin is narrower than some other dewormers, so it should be used at the appropriate dosage. Weight tapes are a great way to estimate your equine’s weight.
