A short story about waiting.

Two people. Same age. Same health. Same job. One buys a 20-year term life insurance policy at 35. The other waits until 45 because "there's no rush."

Same coverage amount. Same carrier. Both healthy.

The 35-year-old pays about half. Literally half. For the same product.

The 45-year-old pays more because they're older. And if their health changes between 35 and 45 (which, statistically, it tends to), the price goes up even more, or coverage gets denied.

Here's what waiting actually costs. It's not just the monthly difference. It's the years you don't get to lock in your insurability while you still have it.

If you're in your 30s and "thinking about it," the math says now. If you're in your 40s and "really thinking about it," the math says today.

Premium doesn't go down. Health doesn't get cheaper.

If you have a trip coming up this summer (and statistically most of us do), spend ten minutes before you leave on this:

Pull up your life insurance policy. Pull up your retirement account. Pull up your kids' 529s if you have them. Look at the beneficiary line. Confirm the name. Confirm the percentage if there's more than one.

When was the last time you actually looked?

For a lot of people the answer is "when I set it up," which means it might still list an ex, or a sibling who's no longer the right choice, or a name spelled wrong, or a percentage that doesn't reflect the family you have now.

Updating a beneficiary takes about three minutes. Not updating it can cost your family years.

Have a great trip. Make sure your paperwork knows who you're traveling with.

The backyard barbecues that go too late. The parades down Main Street. The kids on bikes with streamers in the spokes. The neighbor who brings too much potato salad every single year. The grandparents in lawn chairs watching the same fireworks they watched fifty years ago.

And underneath all of it, the freedoms that made any of it possible. To speak your mind. To worship how you choose. To gather with the people you love. To build a life on your own terms. To raise a family the way you see fit.
