When making repairs or replacing parts to your septic tank, it is a good time to have the tank pumped out. You should also check to make sure that groundwater is not entering the system at any of the various entry points, as it shortens the life of the drain field.
During flooding or heavy rains, septic tank overflowing may occur. For flood prone areas, experts suggest having your septic tank pumped more often to prevent system backups.
There are basically three main qualities to look for when it comes to septic tanks. The tank should provide liquid volume for a 24-hour fluid retention time at maximum sludge depth and scum accumulation. In addition, there should be sufficient sludge storage space, outlet devices to prevent overflow, and venting provisions to direct gases safely away.
Septic systems differ from cesspools in that a septic system has a tank for collecting solid waste matter in which it settles and begins to decompose. A cesspool is a pit where solids collect and is a leaching system for liquids.
