You know how we have the concept of personhood? A person’s understanding of him or herself…their sense of being?… personhood.

Well …how about a neighbor’s understanding of him or herself… the sense of being… call it their sense of neighborliness… call it neighborhood. Who you are and how you are as a neighbor. Your personhood… your neighborhood.

Most often we think about improving a neighborhood as being something outside of us. Someone else’s behavior needing to change to improve the appearance or the dynamics of the street where we live. You can mow someone’s overgrown lawn or pick their weeds, but you can’t control their behavior. You can’t make someone else be a better neighbor. You can only make yourself a better neighbor.
