We have a feel-good story we didn't want to keep to ourselves:
At Camp Wamp, we have had the exceptional good fortune of having unimaginably generous people in our corner. The donations that we get allow us to send kids with physical disabilities to our camp at no cost to their family. We have to point out this wonderful human, . For years now, Thai has crocheted countless darling crocheted pieces like these ( and lots of other styles). She sells them, and donates the proceeds to !! She has literally sold thousands of pieces at this point, and we just have to thank her, and tell this story of her goodness! Thai, your generosity has touched us deeply, and we're immensely grateful for your unwavering support!! XOXO

I just read a thought-provoking post by on "disability apologetics" and it got me thinking about my husband, Steve. Steve has a severe form of cerebral palsy and uses an electric wheelchair to get around. Despite his speech impediment, he's taught me so much about connecting with people. Steve applauds individuals who yearn to connect with him, even if they sometimes struggle to express themselves smoothly. He assumes that nobody would purposely cause offense, so he gives them all the credit due for their pure, good intentions. This easy-going but intentional disposition around people has gotten him all he wants from life. I'm grateful to learn and grow from these dialogues that can potentially advance us all collectively.

This picture is a few years old, but it was such a happy experience that I was happy to see it again.Steve and I were shopping at a mall when we met this little boy and his mom.  The mother had  noticed her child's curiosity about Steve's wheelchair, and simply approached us to see if  he could ask a few questions. It was the best, we loved it, and more than anything, appreciated this wise mother's respect for her child's authentic curiosity, and the risk she took in her open-hearted approach for him to learn about disability.   After the kid asked the questions, and took a little ride, they headed on, with the little boy completely at ease.   When children inquire about Steve and me, for us, that's  just as good as it gets.  Thanks to the warmth of his initial experience, this little boy will likely be more inclined to readily connect with people with disabilities, unfazed and without hesitation next time around, and hopefully continue to find carefree social kinships that enrich us all.

Big thanks to Boreal Mountain, Woodward Tahoe, and Soda Springs Mountain for their generous donation to The Wampler Foundation,  helping send kids with physical disabilities to Camp Wamp! Join the cause by snagging one of their $25 Play Forever Friday lift tickets this winter—$5 goes to local non-profits. Let's give back and spread the love!
