Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue
06/19/2026
Today, members of the Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue Special Operations Team spent the day sharpening their skills on Swiftwater Rescue scenarios at the new NC Emergency Training Center.
While the swiftwater environments we trained in aren’t something we commonly encounter around and on Lake Norman, maintaining proficiency in these specialized rescue disciplines is critical. Emergencies don’t always happen under ideal conditions, and our team remains committed to being prepared for any situation, anywhere, at any time.
Our members hold certifications in swiftwater rescue, and keeping those skills current through continued training and realistic scenarios is paramount to ensuring we can safely and effectively serve our community and assist our neighboring agencies when called upon.
This new facility is a state of the art complex that provides excellent training opportunities to public safety agencies around the country.
Ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, Captain Ranson had the opportunity to speak with WBTV's Cam Man Ron Lee yesterday about our lake training, capabilities, and safety while on the water.
A few reminders while enjoying the water:
• Always wear a life jacket when underway, and kids must ALWAYS have a life jacket on (even when not underway) and while swimming
• Keep a sober operator for every boat
• Watch your speed near docks, marinas, and swimmers
• Keep an eye out for kayakers, paddleboards, and small watercraft
• Check weather conditions before heading out
• Make sure kids are supervised at ALL times near the water
With lake levels lower than normal due to the drought in our area, this could bring some underwater obstructions (debris, limbs, etc) closer to the surface. Please be safe while on the water and as always, we’re here if you need us.
