A child's face is doing 90% of its growing by age 9. The palate is in two pieces until the early teens, then it fuses.

If we catch a narrow palate at 7, we can widen it gently while the seam is still open. Wait until 12 and that window is partly closed.

The decision should be made by what we see on an exam, not by a calendar.
