Nino on opening a hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan 🇦🇫, where everyone spoke Farsi, “This was going to be hard. In the hotel, there were only male employees, tall men with scars, either from dueling or from the national sport, buskashi. It is played on horseback🏇 with the aim of gaining possession of a headless calf, and to become a national hero🏆 by doing so was each man’s goal! The willing staff loved the challenge of creating a spic-and-span European-style spa hotel. I was proud of them.

In 1969 a waiter’s pay was a meager fourteen dollars 💵 a month, and people worked hard for it. In no time, we had the sharpest staff in all of Kabul. Now the tourists and businessmen had a hotel where the staff greeted them in English, and staff members looked smart in their stylish uniforms. On the front line I put youngsters who wanted to learn the Queen’s English.🫅🏻We made weary travelers feel at home by creating an oasis in the desert.
