HEALTHY-MIGHTY CARBS!

Carbohydrates have gotten a bad rap everywhere. However, carbohydrates are the key source of cellular energy.

1) All carbohydrates are not created equal; it is the quality of carbohydrates that matters. In fact, many people find it difficult to follow a prolonged keto diet because it is very low in carbs.

2) But we all heard that carbs are bad and not good for diabetes and weight gain? It depends! Let me explain.

3)Carbohydrates are of two types: Simple vs. Complex

The difference lies based on the molecules. More molecules mean more time the body needs to break them down—therefore, they cause a lower spike in blood glucose. This distinction is what sets simple carbs and complex carbs apart.

Simple Carbs- found in sugar, white bread, and processed foods

Complex Carbs - found in whole grains, legumes, and vegetables

4) How do we know which carbohydrates are good?

The secret lies in their fiber content. Always check the fiber content on the nutrition label—more fiber means a healthier choice. Why? Because as fiber content increases , the amount of simple carbs decreases. Furthermore, fiber is essential for gut health, hormone balance and is considered vital for good bacteria in the gut.

Now you know the truth about carbohydrates.

P.S: Carbs also provide us with micronutrients that are Important for Mitochondria function like B-Vitamins, Magnesium and antioxidants.
