Deciphering Dyslexia

Some of my favorite tutoring moments aren’t the big milestones.
They’re the quiet ones that remind us why we do what we do.
One of our wonderful tutors, Dori, recently shared one of her favorite tutoring moments:
“One of my favorite tutoring moments was when my student began reading a fluency page faster with a little scaffolding and support… and then smiled.”
That smile said so much.
It was the smile of a child realizing, “I can do this.”
Those are the moments we treasure at Deciphering Dyslexia. Sometimes the greatest victories aren’t measured by finishing a level, earning a certificate, or achieving a test score. They’re measured by the confidence that begins to shine through when a child experiences success for the very first time.
Thank you, Dori, for your patience, encouragement, and for celebrating every step of your students’ journey. We are so thankful to have you on our team. 💛

Have you ever looked at your child and thought…
“They’re so smart… so why is reading so hard?” 🤔
I remember asking myself that same question when my son was little.
At first, it looked like he had trouble learning letter sounds, blending words together, and reading smoothly. As he got older, it became avoiding books, struggling with writing, and feeling frustrated anytime reading was involved.
For a long time, I hoped he’d eventually outgrow it.
But here’s what I learned…
Children don’t simply outgrow dyslexia. What they can do is learn to read and spell successfully when they’re taught in a way that makes sense for how their brain learns.
That’s why I’m so passionate about helping other families. The earlier a child gets the right support, the sooner they can build confidence and realize they’re capable all along.
If you’re seeing these same signs in your child, trust your instincts. There is hope, and you don’t have to figure it out alone. Schedule your free consultation down below.

Many parents worry that accommodations will hold their child back.
The truth is, accommodations don’t change what a child is capable of learning, they change how they access learning.
A child with dyslexia is just as intelligent and capable as their peers. Sometimes they simply need the right support to show what they know.
Accommodations aren’t a crutch.
They’re a bridge.
That’s one of the reasons I offer tutoring. My goal is to help bridge that gap by giving students the tools, confidence, and instruction they need to become successful readers.
If you’re curious whether my team and I would be a good fit for your child, we offer free consultations. I’d love to learn more about your child and answer any questions you may have.

Does your child read one word at a time… with long pauses between words? 📚
Reading may sound:
• Choppy
• Slow
• Effortful
• Monotone
For many struggling readers, so much energy goes into figuring out the words that there’s very little left for understanding what they’re actually reading.
Reading shouldn’t feel exhausting every time your child opens a book. 💛
The good news? There is help.
When students receive explicit, systematic instruction that matches the way their brain learns, reading can become more accurate, more automatic, and much less frustrating.
If you’re seeing these signs in your child, trust your instincts. Reading doesn’t have to be this hard, and there is hope. Schedule a free consultation down below.

Why does the Barton Reading & Spelling System work so well for so many students? 💛
Because students aren’t just taught to read words. They’re taught to understand how words are built.
As they progress through the program, students learn:
📚 Roots
📚 Prefixes
📚 Suffixes
Instead of relying on memorization, they begin to recognize patterns and understand the structure of language. This helps them figure out unfamiliar words, expand their vocabulary, and improve reading comprehension.
As students get older and encounter more complex books, textbooks, and academic vocabulary, these skills become even more valuable.
When students understand the building blocks of words, reading becomes less overwhelming, and much more meaningful. 📚✨
