How to Tell if Your Airstream Has Front End Separation
(Question for Colorado Airstream owners: Have you noticed your front seam changing over time?)
Front End Separation is one of the more serious structural issues we see on certain Airstream travel trailers...especially models with front storage compartments.
The tricky part?
It usually doesn’t happen overnight. It develops gradually. And catching it early can mean a cleaner, simpler repair than waiting until the structure shifts more.
Here’s what to look for:

1) Inspect the front seam line
Stand directly in front of your Airstream and look at the bottom corners right and left side.
Watch for:
• A seam that looks wider than before
• A wrinkle in the skin
• A gap between the skin and the rub rail
• Notice if any rivets are missing or loose in that area.

2) Check for movement or flex. Gently press near the seam area. You shouldn’t see noticeable flex. If you do, it may mean the shell isn’t fully secured at key connection points.... movement can also show up more while towing over rough roads.

3) Inspect inside the front compartment. Open the front storage compartment and look for:
• Cracks/stress marks near mounting points
• Separation between interior panels and structure
• Loose or pulled fasteners
• Any signs of water intrusion

Internal stress often shows up before the outside looks dramatic.

4) Watch for new towing noises
New or increasing creaking, popping, or shifting noises from the front while towing can indicate structural movement.

Important: this is NOT a caulking fix
If you suspect separation, don’t patch the seam and hope for the best. This is structural and needs a shop familiar with Airstream aluminum construction.
If something looks off… it probably is.
