Success Stories | East Africa Vegetable Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Innovation Lab (IL) 11/02/2017

Scientists in the Ohio State - College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences are working with Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation - KALRO and other partners to improve smallholder vegetable production and rural livelihoods in Kenya.

Funded by the US Agency for International Development through the Integrated Pest Management Innovation Lab, faculty in Ohio State Plant Science, Ohio State - Department of Plant Pathology, Department of Entomology, The Ohio State University, and The Ohio State University School of Environment and Natural Resources are working collaboratively to develop and implement practices that reduce crop losses due to pests, reduce environmental damage and health concerns associated with over-use of pesticides, improve crop productivity, enhance incomes, and provide better nutrition.

Somanagouda Patil, a U.S. Department of Agriculture Borlaug Fellow completing research in The Ohio State University School of Environment and Natural Resources, discusses why his research on climate smart agricultural practices is so crucial to farmers living in the world's Dry Areas. Patil is currently a researcher with the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), a CGIAR Research Center aimed at providing innovative science-based solutions for improving the resilience and livelihoods of the resource-poor in Dry Areas.
