Leaking while running is NOT always a pelvic floor weakness problem.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that urine leakage during running automatically means your pelvic floor is weak. While weakness can be part of the picture, it’s often much more complex than that.

Some common contributors include:
➡️ Pelvic floor weakness
➡️ Excess pelvic floor tension (yes, muscles can be too tight)
➡️ Poor pressure management through the core and diaphragm
➡️ Hip and trunk weakness affecting load transfer
➡️ Training errors, such as increasing mileage or intensity too quickly
➡️ Hormonal changes that impact tissue support and function

The symptom may look the same, but the root cause can be completely different from person to person.

That’s why doing endless Kegels isn’t always the answer—and in some cases, it may not help at all.

When you identify what’s actually driving your leakage, you can target the right intervention, make more meaningful progress, and often reduce symptoms much sooner.

If you’ve been told to simply “strengthen your pelvic floor” but haven’t seen results, it may be time to look deeper.

Treat the cause, not just the symptom. 🏃‍♀️✨

One of the most overlooked core cues: the serratus anterior.

When people notice rib flare during core exercises, the common instruction is usually “pull your ribs down” or “brace harder.” While those cues can be helpful, they don’t always address what’s driving the position in the first place.

Learning to engage the serratus anterior can often help create better rib positioning by encouraging the rib cage to stack more effectively over the pelvis. This can make it easier to feel the core working without forcing the ribs down or relying on excessive tension.

It’s also important to remember that rib flare isn’t inherently bad. In fact, some degree of rib flare during certain functional activities—like reaching overhead, throwing, sprinting, or other athletic movements—is completely normal and often necessary. The goal isn’t to eliminate rib flare in every situation, but to have the ability to control and manage it when needed.

Does this mean serratus activation is the answer for everyone? No. There are many different reasons someone may present with rib flare, and there are many cues that can improve core engagement depending on the individual.

But the serratus anterior is frequently left out of the conversation, despite playing a major role in rib cage mechanics, breathing, and trunk stability.

Sometimes better core activation isn’t about squeezing harder—it’s about finding the right connection.

Our waitlist may be long but our admin team do not mess around with getting our people in. 🤣

Don’t be afraid of the waitlist, our team prioritizes our clients scheduled and waiting. The moment there’s an opening, they contact the next person on the list and in many cases getting them in way sooner than anticipated.

So grateful to our whole team that prioritizes taking care of our people. There is seldom an actual opening because of their efforts and we truly wouldn’t have it any other way.
