Leaking while running is NOT always a pelvic floor weakness problem.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that urine leakage during running automatically means your pelvic floor is weak. While weakness can be part of the picture, itâs often much more complex than that.
Some common contributors include:
âĄď¸ Pelvic floor weakness
âĄď¸ Excess pelvic floor tension (yes, muscles can be too tight)
âĄď¸ Poor pressure management through the core and diaphragm
âĄď¸ Hip and trunk weakness affecting load transfer
âĄď¸ Training errors, such as increasing mileage or intensity too quickly
âĄď¸ Hormonal changes that impact tissue support and function
The symptom may look the same, but the root cause can be completely different from person to person.
Thatâs why doing endless Kegels isnât always the answerâand in some cases, it may not help at all.
When you identify whatâs actually driving your leakage, you can target the right intervention, make more meaningful progress, and often reduce symptoms much sooner.
If youâve been told to simply âstrengthen your pelvic floorâ but havenât seen results, it may be time to look deeper.
Treat the cause, not just the symptom. đââď¸â¨

One of the most overlooked core cues: the serratus anterior.
When people notice rib flare during core exercises, the common instruction is usually âpull your ribs downâ or âbrace harder.â While those cues can be helpful, they donât always address whatâs driving the position in the first place.
Learning to engage the serratus anterior can often help create better rib positioning by encouraging the rib cage to stack more effectively over the pelvis. This can make it easier to feel the core working without forcing the ribs down or relying on excessive tension.
Itâs also important to remember that rib flare isnât inherently bad. In fact, some degree of rib flare during certain functional activitiesâlike reaching overhead, throwing, sprinting, or other athletic movementsâis completely normal and often necessary. The goal isnât to eliminate rib flare in every situation, but to have the ability to control and manage it when needed.
Does this mean serratus activation is the answer for everyone? No. There are many different reasons someone may present with rib flare, and there are many cues that can improve core engagement depending on the individual.
But the serratus anterior is frequently left out of the conversation, despite playing a major role in rib cage mechanics, breathing, and trunk stability.
Sometimes better core activation isnât about squeezing harderâitâs about finding the right connection.
