Superintendent’s Message to CCS Community
Schools Closed for Remainder of the School Year
Hello Columbus City Schools Community,
Today, Governor Mike DeWine announced that all schools in the state of Ohio will remain closed through the end of the 2019-2020 academic year to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
This is certainly not how we expected to end the school year when we kicked it off last August. But this is a new reality that school districts across the country are now facing, and we must adjust to delivering quality educational experiences to our students remotely.
I’m sure many of you are feeling much like I am in craving a return to normalcy. We are uncertain what the future holds and what it means for our students and staff, and I know this uncertainty can be stressful. As we lead these new remote lives, I can’t help but miss seeing our students and staff in our school buildings. Our schools are a safe haven and second home for so many of our students, and we cannot wait until the day we are able to welcome them back in.
Until that time comes, though, Columbus City Schools is committed to engaging with and educating our students through the CCS Online Academy, which will be our virtual learning platform through the end of the academic year. Our school buildings may be closed, but learning will continue remotely.
Teachers are assigning required work for their students in the Online Academy. For many of our seniors, this online coursework is important to complete in order to meet graduation requirements. If you are a student who has not logged on or connected virtually with your teacher, I strongly encourage you to do so this week.
Today’s news from the Governor was certainly not surprising to hear but disappointing nonetheless. I am especially disappointed for our seniors who are missing out on significant moments in their lives. We have established a Senior Task Force to brainstorm ways in which we can appropriately celebrate and honor our seniors in the coming weeks. While these ideas can never replace the traditional ceremonies and experiences, I’m hopeful that what we are able to do can give our seniors some sense of celebration and accomplishment.
We know that our students, their families, and the broader community are facing uncertain and unprecedented times. We want to be here to help and support in any way that we can. Please visit StaySafeCCS.org to find a wealth of information and resources that are available to our families.
To all of our students, families, and staff please stay safe!
Sincerely,
Talisa Dixon
