Dead Man's Hand

Tonight is Longest Night.

Throughout our civilization, science, literature, and religion alike have built themselves around the cycle of light and dark and have always marked this night as a point of renewal, of hope, of solace. Be it marking the darkest hour being just before dawn, looking to the East on the fifth day, or marking holidays on the solstice, tonight has mattered throughout our species' civilized existence.

I always mark tonight every year by isolation and driving - no route tonight, but I'll be driving to a hilltop in the southeast to appreciate the dawn(Astronomy Park ftw). I will mourn friends, circumstances, hopes and a myriad other things that will be left in 2024. It's not a sad time - it is proper. Too often we do not meditate on what has gone. Like ghosts, they follow, little by little.

For all of you, I hope the night passes safely. May you be warm, well, and loved. For those that are sad, mourning, or anxious for the future, rest assured that the darkness cannot last forever.

Longest Night is the night when you can trust that any direction you go, you will be walking toward the dawn.

It will do us all well to remember that. As ever, I send you all much love.
