Children will not remember every explanation we give them.
They may remember a character.
They may remember a moment in a story.
They may remember sitting beside a trusted adult and feeling safe enough to talk about something difficult.
That is why children’s books can become more than entertainment.
They can provide language, connection, and a starting point for understanding feelings that children may not yet know how to explain.
This broader need is also part of what inspired my upcoming children’s book, Captain Steady and the Wobbly Moments.

A child’s reaction is not always the whole story. Sometimes the behavior is only the part we can see.

Telling a child to “calm down” is not the same as teaching the child what to do when frustration, fear, or disappointment begins to take over.
Children need language and skills that are simple enough to understand, remember, and practice.
In this week’s post, I explore how children’s books can help young readers:
understand difficult feelings
build emotional language
learn through relatable characters
discuss challenges without shame
practice healthier responses with supportive adults
The goal is not to create children who never become upset.
The goal is to help them understand that a difficult feeling does not have to control what happens next.

Coaches, the hard moment is not just something to get past.
It is where the athlete shows you what they have actually trained.
Can they reset after the mistake?
Can they stay connected when fatigue shows up?
Can they listen when frustration is high?
Can they return to the next controllable action?
Adversity gives coaches information.
The goal is not to remove every uncomfortable moment. The goal is to help athletes build the awareness, composure, and discipline to respond well inside those moments.
That is where development happens.
