There's a saying in the working world: 20% of the people do 80% of the work.

In most industries, that's an inconvenient truth. In healthcare, it's a crisis.

Because healthcare work isn't selling pizzas. It's people's lives. And when 20% of the team is carrying the weight, those people don't just get tired. They get burned. They build a crust. They stop feeling things they should feel, because feeling everything in a system that never slows down will swallow you whole.

I've watched it happen. I lived it.

When we built Navigate Wellness, Janie and I made a decision that shapes everything about how we operate: we only hire the 20%ers. The people who can't walk past something undone. The people who still care deeply who got into healthcare because they meant it and who are tired of being taken advantage of by systems that let them carry everyone else.

Here's what happens when you build a team like that: you don't have to protect your clients from your employees. Everyone is already racing toward the same standard. Everyone is already reaching for the check.

We spend our energy going further, Thanksgiving dinners from scratch, a client's mother's pumpkin pie recipe made real for one last holiday, Christmas caroling at people's homes. Not because it was assigned. Because it's who these people are.

But here's the other side of that coin: we also protect our 20%ers from themselves.

Because the same people who can't walk past something undone are the same people who will run themselves into the ground if you let them. Our job as leaders is to cut them off. To build a team where no one has to be everything, because everyone is bringing everything.

What does this mean for you as a client? It means the person walking into your parent's home has chosen this work as a craft. They're not just filling a shift. They're invested. They know your family. They've thought ahead. They see things you haven't noticed yet.

That's not an accident. It's a hiring philosophy.

Every time we suggested adding more support, she thought about it, talked to her family, and made the call herself.

That's client-directed care, and it's non-negotiable for us.

No, you don't automatically have power of attorney. As long as your parent is competent and able to make decisions, they remain the primary decision-maker. Medical durable power of attorney only activates if they become unconscious or are deemed incompetent due to cognitive decline. Without these documents, decisions default to next-of-kin laws, which can be complicated and messy.
