Demystifying the Label “King James Bible” or “King James Version”! The Untold Story: Did you know that the label “King James” on the Bible isn’t quite what you think? Back in 1611, the original edition had no royal title whatsoever. Its cover simply read “THE HOLY BIBLE, Conteyning the Old Testament, AND THE NEW: Newly Translated out of the original tongues.” No “King James Version” or “Authorized Version” was in sight. The Original Mission: This translation of THE HOLY BIBLE, initially referred to as the “New Translation,” was commissioned by King James I. His aim was to replace the 1568 Bishop’s Bible in churches, which had succeeded the Great Bible of 1539, the prior authorized version for the Church of England. Here’s the surprise: King James himself didn’t actually translate anything – he merely authorized the project led by 54 scholars and theologians. Evolution of the Label: The misleading label “King James Bible” didn’t make an appearance until much later. The first editions of the King James Bible to officially bear the designation “King James Version” surfaced in the 1800s. It gained significant traction in the 19th and 20th centuries, with millions of copies being printed. It’s essential to note that King James played no direct role in the translation process. The name we commonly use today took quite some time to become associated with this historical translation.
