Reading: Mark 12:41–44

We become what we behold.

This week, we're slowing down to pay attention to the beauty of Jesus. Today's reading takes place in the Temple. People are placing their offerings into the treasury. Some give large amounts. Others no doubt notice. But Jesus notices someone else.

A widow approaches and drops in two small copper coins—an amount so small it would have been easy to overlook. Everyone else sees a tiny gift. Jesus sees a generous heart.

James Tissot's painting The Widow's Mite captures this moment beautifully. The widow stands almost unnoticed among the crowd. Nothing about her appearance suggests importance. Yet Jesus sees what no one else sees. He isn't impressed by the size of the gift. He's moved by the love and trust behind it.

It's a reminder that God's attention often falls differently than ours does. We tend to notice what is loud, impressive, and visible. Jesus notices faithfulness. Take a moment to sit with that.

REFLECT
What do you notice about the way Jesus pays attention in this story?
Why do you think the widow caught his eye when so many others did not?
Where are you tempted to measure value the way the world does—by size, success, influence, or recognition?
What small act of faithfulness in your life might God see differently than you do?

PRAYER
Jesus,
Thank you for seeing what others miss. When I am tempted to measure my worth by accomplishments, recognition, or comparison, remind me that you look deeper.
Teach me to value faithfulness over impressiveness, love over appearance, and generosity over applause. Give me eyes to notice the people and moments that are easy to overlook.
As I behold your way of seeing, help me learn to see like you.
Amen.
