LAS COPAS MUNDIALES DE FUTBOL HAN SIDO GANADAS POR PAÍSES CATOLICOS EN SU MAYORÍA!

Este domingo, por segunda vez en la historia, se disputará una final de la Copa del Mundo entre dos países de habla hispana y mayoría católica: uno que llevó la fe a las Américas y otro que dio a la Iglesia el primer Papa del continente.

Desde 1930 hasta el Mundial de 2022, el trofeo ha sido levantado mayoritariamente por católicos. Existe además un detalle adicional: el torneo mismo fue impulsado por un católico, Jules Rimet —presidente de la FIFA en la década de 1920—, cuya visión dio origen a la Copa del Mundo tal como la conocemos.

Así pues, no solo la mayoría de los campeones provienen de países con tradición católica, sino que la propia historia de la Copa hunde sus raíces en la visión de un hijo de la Iglesia.

Aunque se han celebrado 23 Mundiales, solo ocho países han conquistado el título. De ellos, seis son de mayoría católica: Brasil, Italia, Argentina, Uruguay, Francia y España; mientras que solo dos no lo son: Alemania e Inglaterra.

Esos seis países de mayoría católica han ganado 17 de los 22 títulos disputados hasta la fecha, y el trofeo de 2026 irá a parar a manos de España o Argentina, dos de las naciones católicas más emblemáticas.

This Sunday, for the second time in history, a World Cup final will be contested between two Spanish-speaking, majority-Catholic countries: one that brought the faith to the Americas, and another that gave the Church the first Pope from the continent.

From 1930 through the 2022 World Cup, the trophy has largely been “lifted by Catholics.” There is also an added detail: the tournament itself was promoted by a Catholic, Jules Rimet, FIFA president in the 1920s, whose vision gave rise to the World Cup as we know it.

So not only do most champions come from countries with a Catholic tradition, but the very history of the Cup is rooted in the vision of a son of the Church.

Although 23 World Cups have been held, only eight countries have won the title. Of those, six are majority Catholic: Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Uruguay, France, and Spain, while only two are not: Germany and England.

Those six Catholic-majority countries have won 17 of the 22 titles already contested, and the 2026 trophy will go to either Spain or Argentina—two of the most emblematic Catholic nations.
