What Is Astragalus? Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is a perennial plant indigenous to China, Mongolia, and parts of Korea. The medicinal component is derived from the dried root, typically sliced or chopped. For centuries, it has been utilized in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a foundational herb to enhance vitality and promote overall wellness. Traditional and Modern Uses Astragalus root is commonly associated with immune system support, adaptogenic properties, energy and fatigue reduction, cardiovascular support, liver support, and general vitality and longevity. In TCM, it is classified as a Qi tonic, believed to strengthen life force energy. Active Compounds Astragalus contains several bioactive compounds, including polysaccharides associated with immune modulation, saponins studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and flavonoids contributing to antioxidant activity. These compounds are the focus of modern pharmacological research. How It’s Commonly Used Astragalus root is typically prepared as a decoction, tincture, powdered extract, or capsules, and added to traditional soups and broths. The sliced form is commonly used for simmering in teas or broths.
