Writing Tip: Conversational writing (e.g., Using second person terms such as "you" and "your") has a personalizing effect on your content. Use this writing style whenever possible to have the greatest effect on your audience.

So often I see businesses trying to imitate content from a competitor. They say with a heart full of sincerity, "This is what my competitor is doing. I think I want something similar on my site. What do you think?"

I think you should try being yourself.

Why does that matter when it comes to copywriting? Because if you imitate your competition you'll blend in with a sea of companies all vying for the attention of the same audience.

Stand out! I know it's scary. I know it's painful. But you have to be willing to be bold!

How do you do that?

Well, a big part of it is self-awareness. Where is it that your brand stands out? Do you offer killer cupcakes that are made with 100-year-old recipe passed down by your great-great grandmother? Then instead of copying generic uber-modern content or faux vintage appeal of your competition, play up that secret recipe!

Don't be afraid to dive in to what makes you and your business unique. Share what you find with the world and experiment.

Most of branding and marketing is trial and error anyways--at least in the beginning. You have to find what works for you and your business. And you have to do it with bravery in your heart. Otherwise, you'll end up a clone of ten thousand other companies doing what you do.

When the average person hears the word "marketing" they roll their eyes and ignore whatever comes after. Some even think it's little more than a con game aimed at sucking money out of their pockets.

But what if I were to tell you it's an art form? One where you can make genuine connections and express yourself. Because at the heart of marketing, that's precisely what it is.

Sure, you may have to think more and care more about what your audience wants and needs, but at the end of the day it's simply putting out there what you do.

For example, if you own a business-to-business (B2B) company and sell advertising. Yes, your customers need to know what it is you do that should make them want to hire you. But what would be far more effective is to show them.

Share your success stories in an artful way. Use infographics, videos, blog posts, social media contests. Engage, share, and create. Show your creativity!

After all, any time we buy something it's either because a) we don't have the time to do it ourselves or b) we don't have the skills to create or execute a similar idea.

By showing what you do best in a way that works for you, you're using your creativity. And that isn't something that can be duplicated.
