Colleges Should Put Their Money Where Their Ideals Are Why is it appropriate to use the dining halls to encourage sustainability and divestment from fossil fuels, but not the endowment?

The Movement to Divest from Fossil Fuels Gains Momentum 01/19/2018

"Activists have urged divestment for what you might call moral reasons: if it’s wrong to wreck the planet, it’s wrong to profit from the wreckage. But pension funds are willing to divest because they’ve come to believe that the future is not about coal and oil and gas—that these are now on the decline. The future lies elsewhere." -Bill McKibben

Divestment is no longer simply about ethics and morals--there is a compelling economic argument for shifting to a sustainable endowment.

As fossil fuel resources diminish globally, remaining invested in such resource extraction is unwise. The rapid expansion of the sustainable energy sector is exciting--both from an environmentalist's and an economist's perspective. We are approaching a tipping point in the economic viability of fossil fuels--Colorado College, as an progressive institution, should be leading the pack in shifting the larger economy towards sustainability. We must go fossil fuel free.
