Two aids for Holiday eating. One is get a bottle of charcoal caps. If the food is really making you feel bad take a couple. They will absorb a lot of the toxins or irritants so you stop absorbing them. While foods and some Walgreens have them. Works really well if that's the issue, much better than peptobismal.
The second too is to make sure you're taking a multivitamin. There is a lot of work for the liver to do with all the food and drink. The liver requires a lot of different nutrients to perform all of its tasks. Extra available means you don't get as sleepy and bloated from the liver not keeping up. Lots of water too so what the liver detoxifies can go in out through the kidneys. Happy Thanksgiving!
I'm a big believer in the long term value of good supplements. After following patients over decades the benefits are obvious. The brightness of their eyes, the sharpness of their thinking, the springiness in their step, the health of their hair, skin joints, organs is noticeably better. Most people, however, have a hard time maintaining good supplement habits. I have two "tools" or ways of thinking to help with this.
The first is to have a basic foundation of supplements that you ALWAYS take even if you have dropped some supplements due to budget or just tired of taking them. The foundation for most people is a good multi and fish oil. At least take those. This will vary a little but for most people will be an excellent base to work from. That doesn't mean you don't need other things but keep the basics in place even if you're going through a period of taking few supplements.
The second strategy is to take consistent, short, two day breaks from your supplements. As important as good supplementation is, it's a lot for the liver to process everyday. The body seems to rebel from doing ANYTHING every single day. I recommend taking one or two weekends per month and take no supplements. This will give the liver a break and let it clean house and regroup. One day is not sufficient to get the effect you're looking for. Generally you should feel a little lighter and more willing to continue the supplements. Sometimes the feeling of being "tired of taking so many supplements" is actually the liver rebelling. Please note that this does NOT apply to medications, stopping and starting those is not recommended without a medical doctors advice. Drinking extra water and taking a small amount of liver support such as Silymarin or NutriWest Total Liver Detox will help you clear your system easier on this two day "supplement fast". If you are on significant neurotransmitter precursor support, be cautious with stopping those entirely for two days. If you have to keep the neurotransmitter support in place to avoid extreme tiredness, brain fog or depression, fasting from the rest of your supplements for two days will still help. Don't be too rigid with this strategy, see how you feel. If you're especially disciplined about taking supplements these breaks are even more important for you. If you're someone who forgets some days, just don't take any supplements the following day either to get your two day fast in. Remember, skipping (or forgetting) one day is not enough.
The "REAL" Bulletproof Coffee for excellent brain energy and brain clarity. Please read this whole article.
Here is the the original recipe:
It's deceptively simple but was the result of years of experimentation. It cannot be modified and still get the full Bulletproof effect on energy and brain clarity.
12-15 ounces of brewed coffee
1 1/2 - 2 tablespoons of pasture butter
1 1/2 tablespoons of Brain Octane or "good" MCT Oil.
Blend these together in a blender very strongly for at least 20 seconds. NOTHING else in there. Ignore other "Bulletproof" recipes on the internet.
Notes:
Almost everyone in the USA uses Kerrygold Irish butter for this. It's readily available and is almost completely grass fed. It's also great tasting butter. The unsalted tastes better in the coffee. Sometimes a tiny pinch of salt can improve the taste of coffee but salted butter usually has too much for my taste. Grass fed butter has a slightly different make up than grain fed butter. Grain fed butter, even organic, is often a source of residual mold toxins from the grain as well. For some even small amounts of mold toxins can cause very negative brain effects. Coffee is also a common source. If you like the Bulletproof coffee effect, consider getting Dave Asprey's Bulletproof brand of coffee. He tests each batch to make sure it's low enough in mold toxins to not cause a reaction. Bought in 5 pound bags, it's not too expensive and never causes a bad reaction like some coffee will.
Brain Octane is sold by Dave Asprey and is pure 8 carbon chain oil. This is the primary oil which gives the Bulletproof effect. He also sells XCT Oil which is C8 and C10 oils which is also pretty good. The NOW brand MCT oil is also C8 and C10 and it's readily available in Natural Grocers and Whole Foods. NOW brand MCT and XCT don't work as well as Brain Octane but they're pretty close. C12 oil (Lauric Acid) is also considered an MCT oil but does NOT give the Bulletproof effect at all. It is cheaper and often a big part some MCT oils. It is also the largest component of coconut oil which is why coconut oil is not used in Bulletproof coffee. Coconut oil or Lauric Acid absolutely will NOT give the energy and brain clarity you're looking for with Bulletproof coffee.
I strongly recommend use of a NutriNinja bullet type blender. It makes this a very easy thing to prepare and is much more durable than other similar blenders. Get the original stand alone bullet type NutriNinja, not the combination NutriNinja regular blender with included "bullet" cups. Those do not have strong enough plastic. Other brands don't hold up either. You're not technically supposed to blend hot stuff in the NutriNinja either but they do hold up well to it. Hot stuff creates slight pressure in an enclosed system like this so open slowly after blending with it tilted away from you. Regular countertop blenders are much more trouble and take a lot more effort to keep clean and to blend without getting oil on stuff. With the bullet type you blend, rinse off the blades with hot tap water and drink right from the bullet cup. Then rinse the cup for use tomorrow. Run it through dishwasher once in a while or put hot water and a couple drops of dish detergent in and blend. The NutriNinja bullet blender is available at Target, other retailers and online. It should run $60-70 and is worth it. For easy digestion, best effect and best taste this needs very strong blending. It should not have any oily feel or taste at all. This is also an excellent smoothie blender, that's what it's made for.
I also suggest that most days you do only Bulletproof coffee in the morning. This is what will help you stabilize your blood sugar as it trains the body to burn fat instead of sugar. Eating anything or putting anything else in the coffee such as cream, sugar or honey will trigger your insulin system and put you back in sugar burning mode. Usually you will have plenty of energy on just the Bulletproof coffee. At least give it an hour or two to keep you in fat burning mode. Don't be obsessive, though. Take breaks or add some other stuff to the coffee occasionally if you want. Just know that you won't get nearly the Bulletproof effect on those days. Also for most people you need to START SLOW. If your system isn't used to that sudden shot of fat, it can cause distress to stomach or gall bladder and/or diarrhea. Start with about 1 teaspoon of butter and oil and build up Most quickly adapt to it but a few may need some gall bladder support for a little while such as NutriWest GB Plus. It's worth it.
Dave Asprey has two books worth reading on this subject of brain health, clarity and energy. "The Bulletproof Diet" and "Headstrong". They are easily available on the Kindle app and can also be obtained on paper on Amazon I believe.
I returned from Mexico a few days ago and ended up with the famous Montezuma's Revenge the last day I was there. On the plane ride back I was extremely debilitated and in intense pain all over my body. Even my teeth and eyeballs hurt. My brain wasn't working so hot either but I had plenty of time to think about what was going on. The gut infection, very likely a bacteria even though I was very careful eating and drinking there, was producing toxins which I was absorbing into my system and causing my fatigue and pain. I suddenly realized I know what to do for that. When I landed in Denver I Googled "charcoal capsules in Denver" and a nearby Walgreens was the easiest place to get them. I got them and took several. Within 30 minutes my symptoms started reducing and within 2 hours were mostly gone. My diarrhea also immediately started getting better as the toxins were no longer irritating the gut lining so much. The charcoal absorbs chemicals so readily it is a common treatment in hospitals for poisoning. So really what was happening to me, I was being poisoned. Now I will add that I also went to a whole foods and got some intense liquid probiotic containers and was doing that along with the charcoal and that worked better than either by itself. Charcoal should also work for any regular food poisoning. They call it food ”poisoning" because you are absorbing toxins (poisons) from the food. I used Nature's Way charcoal capsules I got at Walgreen's. I just saw a display of 4 different brands of charcoal including "Bulletproof Coconut Charcoal" which is a particularly clean one. I just bought a bottle of that brand to have on hand. Another non-emergency use of charcoal is when you end up eating some not so good food at a restaurant or fast food place as most of us do from time to time, especially when traveling. Take one or two charcoal capsules to keep from being as affected by the lower quality food. Some important cautions on charcoal. It should not be taken with meds or supplements as it will bind those as well and you won't absorb them. If you need charcoal try to take it several hours away meds and supplements. The other caution is that it can be constipating if taken too much. Even with these cautions it is one of the safest and most effective approaches to many gut issues. Also keep in mind that your p**p is SUPPOSED to be black if you've taken charcoal!
Holidays tend to be stressful for many. Busy stress, money stress, family stress, consuming rich food and drink stress, lack of exercise stress. In addition the colder weather triggers a lot of people to stop drinking water, so dehydration stress. A hidden stress factor is that thinking of holidays and family triggers old unconscious patterns. Suddenly that time you fell off your bike or had a bad fever when you were a kid is restimulated unconsciously. That can bring up old physical and emotional pain or tension and you think it's "just stress" because, well, it's unconscious.
No matter what the source, any of this can keep you from enjoying the holidays and being as loving to your family and friends as you would like.
I can almost always help greatly with all this and enable you have a great holiday. Schedule a visit or three during the holidays. It can be your gift to yourself and your family. (719) 337-6633
