NEWS: A direct challenge to Citizens United is headed to voters in Montana.

After nearly 50,000 signatures, a November ballot measure would ban corporations and trade associations — including out-of-state groups — from spending to influence Montana elections.

The super PAC era may have just met its mutiny. 👊

I’ve spent a lot of time watching the gubernatorial race and federal House races. Maybe I should spend a little more time digging into my own state House district race.

Especially since I ran for the seat once, which now feels like something that happened to a different species of me.

And the truth is, if I were the representative for House District 14, I’d do one thing and I wouldn’t let it go.

I’d run legislation to refer a constitutional amendment to Colorado voters making clear that the charters, limited liability protections, and other legal privileges the state confers on corporations and similar artificial entities do not include the power to spend money to influence elections.

That’s it. That would be the center of gravity.

And I would drag that fight into the open every chance I got. I would use every lawful procedural tool available. I would make people take a position in public. I would name who supports it, who blocks it, and who keeps pretending process is some neutral force of nature instead of the place where inconvenient things go to die.

Because this isn’t one issue among many. It isn’t one item on a policy menu. It’s the machinery underneath it all.

Nothing else matters if elections can be bought by the highest bidder.

Hawaii has already enacted the basic theory in statute. Montana is trying to do the same. Colorado’s citizen initiative route hit a procedural wall, which means the legislative route is now a clear test of who actually intends to act and who is just performing.

So ask the people running to represent you in the State House whether they’ll commit to doing this.

Then watch carefully.

Who says yes.
Who says no.
Who vanishes into fog.
Who suddenly discovers a procedural allergy.

That will tell you all you need to know.
