As we continue through our year long Bible Reading plan, this week's reading takes us through Ezekiel 1 to 24. These chapters unfold during one of the most difficult seasons in Israel's history as God's people are living in exile because of their rebellion. Yet even in the midst of these sobering passages, God gives His people a remarkable promise of hope.
The Lord reveals His holiness as He confronts sin, but He also reveals His mercy by promising that He will do what His people could never accomplish apart from Him. He promises to do a great work in His people: He will give them new hearts, renew them by His Spirit, and restore them into fellowship with Himself.
This promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in the work of Christ. He is the Good Shepherd who came to seek and save the lost, and through His life, death, and resurrection He establishes a new covenant, bringing all who trust in Him into God's redeemed people. In Him, God transforms hearts, forgives sin, and gathers His people into His family. What Ezekiel saw as a future promise, we now see fulfilled in Christ, who continues His work of renewing all who trust in Him.
God is not only concerned with outward obedience but with inward transformation. He delights to change hearts so that His people will know Him, love Him, and walk in His ways. As you read this week, consider how God works in His people today. He continues to transform hearts, keep His covenant promises, and lead His people with the faithful care that only our Good Shepherd can provide. We are His people, and He is our God.
Where does church hurt come from?
Church hurt is real, and it has sadly caused many people to walk away from the faith. This phrase is widely used and carries significant weight, so we should be careful to define what we mean when we use it.
Sometimes, what is described as "church hurt" stems from the church faithfully teaching hard biblical truths. At other times, it is the result of genuine harm caused by pride, selfishness, or lust left unchecked within the church. When it comes to church hurt, pain comes from the sinful nature of man, not from Jesus.
The aches and pains of life in the church arise when people start importing the ways of the world instead of exporting patterns of Christlikeness. Paul's letter to the Colossians serves as a call to all believers to set their minds on Christ, put sinful desires to death, and put on love, humility, forgiveness, and thankfulness.
The church will always be made up of imperfect people, but thankfully, it will always have a perfect Savior as its head.
