It is with tremendous sadness that we share the news of the loss of our dear friend and fellow artist Judy Sigunick. It is also with joy and gratefulness of being able to know her that we celebrate her, as that is the core of who Judy was as Judy. Purely Judy.

She came waltzing into our old gallery one day back in 2002 wearing cutoff denim shorts and combat boots splattered in clay and proceeded to sit down in the office and start chatting away with verve and energy, so happy to see the arts in Beacon finally have a big venue. She was the friendliest person I had met to date, and genuine beyond belief. Without directly intending to do so she taught me what it meant to be an artist. To create. To create genuinely. And to live that way.

Over the years I was able to curate her work in several shows, and in turn she was able to offer me the largest opportunity of my exhibiting career: an entire building to install anything I wanted. Sky’s the limit, she said. Indeed, it always was with Judy and Phil and Ellen. The creative forces that came out of that big house up in Cragsmoor will always be felt deeply and passionately.

Thank you, Judy. For all those lessons that you didn’t intend to teach, but did. Thank you.

Our hearts are with Phil Sigunick, Ellen Sigunick, Rachel Saunders, Adam Saunders and their family in this difficult time.
