A huge thank you to Library Board of Trustees President Jim Windisch for leading a public reading of the Declaration of Independence as part of a nationwide program commemorating America’s 250th anniversary!

Join us tomorrow for our Reading of the Declaration of Independence - Wednesday, July 8 (3 pm)
Join the Coeur d’Alene Public Library for a meaningful, once-in-a-generation civic event as Library Board of Trustees President Jim Windisch leads a public reading of the Declaration of Independence as part of a nationwide program commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.
On July 8, 2026, communities across the United States and beyond will participate in “Sharing the Spirit of America,” a coordinated effort to read the Declaration of Independence aloud at the same moment in time. This initiative honors the historic day on July 8, 1776, when the Declaration was first read publicly in Philadelphia, proclaiming the colonies’ independence to the people.
Two hundred fifty years later, Americans will once again gather in libraries, civic spaces, and neighborhoods to recreate that shared moment. At a synchronized start time of 6:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, participants in all 50 states, five U.S. territories, the District of Columbia, and even locations around the globe will begin reading together.
Despite spanning roughly 9,500 miles and ten time zones, this unique program allows Americans everywhere to take part “together” through coordinated local start times, symbolizing unity across distance and geography.
At the Coeur d’Alene Public Library, Jim Windisch will guide this local observance, inviting community members to pause, reflect, and engage with the words that helped define a nation. The reading provides an opportunity to connect with the ideals of liberty, equality, and self-governance expressed in the Declaration while participating in a shared national experience.
This event is free and open to all. Community members are encouraged to attend and be part of a historic moment as Americans across the country and around the world unite in reading the Declaration of Independence—together.
