Great conversation to have!

Your kid will probably be involved in a car crash:

If you are a parent of a new driver it is a good idea to do a walk through of their first crash before it happens. Your teen and you will be much better prepared when the crash actually happens. Can't tell you how many teens and parents I have spoken with who are completely surprised when they are involved in a vehicle crash.
Items to talk through:

At fault or not at fault: This does not matter much at the scene.
Talk it through anyways as it might be important at a later date.

Crash scene safety: Make sure scene is safe before getting out of the car. Other cars are still on the road and we don't want people to get run over just because they are angry or upset. Pull off the road if possible and it is safe to do so.

First aid: What to do if there are injuries either in your car or the other car. Sometimes professional or even amateur help is a long ways away.

Other driver reaction: The other driver may be upset or crying and how will we deal with them.

Call to police: If not sure about calling police the call should probably be made. Police can show up and clear the scene if they are not needed.

Call home: This one is important because parents usually get surprised when their kid is in an accident. Parents need to check themselves as well when responding to an accident as we don't want a second accident because you are emotional and driving.

Documents: You will need to show license, registration, and proof of insurance. Insurance can be shown on electronic device in most states.

Use the mini computer in your pocket for something useful and take some photos.

Good idea to talk about how insurance works.

What about a tow truck? Your kid is going to have to tell police what their plan is with the broken car.

By talking through a crash your child and you will be much better prepared for when it happens (and it will happen).
