In spring trees need their energy reserves for new growth and bus burst and spending it on compartmentalizing wounded areas will cause it unnecessary stress at this time.

Cutting tree branches in summer and early fall (during the growing season) can be particularly damaging because it stimulates new growth in the tree. Having new growth right before the tree enters its natural dormancy can cause decay, disease, and premature death.

In autumn deciduous trees need energy reserves for abscission and many fungi are producing spores at this time, giving a higher chance of fungal infection.
